The Roots of Mother's Day

The first Mother's Day was celebrated at a church in Grafton, WV on May 10, 1908. Inspired by the work of her mother to promote "Mother's Friendship Day" in the 1860s, Anna Jarvis took the momentum of her regional event and focused on establishing a national holiday. She started a letter campaign pushing newspapers and political leaders to encourage the adoption of a day honoring motherhood.

In 1914, US President Woodrow Wilson officially established the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day. Jarvis' original vision for Mother's Day revolved around a personal celebration between families where wearing a white carnation was symbolic of visiting one's mother or attending church.

Florists, candy makers and retailers would later associate the holiday to gift giving. That trend has grown steadily, with an expected spend of $20 billion on Mother's Day gifts this year.

You Better Call Mom!

Moms love catching up with their kids, and kids tend to reach out to their moms on Mother's Day. About 122 million phone calls are made to moms on Mother's Day in the United States each year. The Mother's Day phone call spike can increase phone traffic by as much as 37 percent.

Unique Ways to Celebrate

Mother's Day-type holidays are celebrated all over the world. In Japan, mothers are given traditional gifts like red carnations, scarves and handbags. In Sweden, children sell plastic flowers to raise money for small getaways with mom.

One of the strangest traditions takes place in Yugoslavia, where children are encouraged to tie their mother up early in the morning! The mother can only be set free by giving gifts to her children.
