Gas Prices Stable (for now)

Spring gas prices expected to increase

Today’s national average price for a gallon of gasoline is $2.53, which is up one cent from one week ago. One year ago, the price was $2.31. The New York State average is $2.71, down one cent from last week. A year ago, the NYS average was $2.45.

AAA Western and Central New York (AAA WCNY) reports the following averages:

  • Batavia - $2.67 (up 1 cent in past week)
  • Buffalo - $2.67 (no change in past week)
  • Ithaca - $2.67 (no change in past week)
  • Rochester - $2.66 (down 1 cent in past week)
  • Rome - $2.71 (down 1 cent in past week)
  • Syracuse - $2.63 (down 2 cents in past week)
  • Watertown - $2.73 (down 2 cents in past week)

Today’s national average price for regular unleaded gasoline is $2.53 per gallon, which is 22 cents more than last year. Gas prices have continued to decline across the country in the past three weeks, but as noted in our quarterly gas report released last week, this trend will be short-lived. Pump prices are expected to increase this spring. AAA forecasts the national gas price average will be as much as $2.70/gallon this spring, which means that local prices in New York State will be closer to $3.00/gallon.

A new AAA survey found the vast majority of consumers would change their driving habits or lifestyle to offset higher gas prices. One in four say they would start making changes at $2.75, while 40 percent say $3.00 is their tipping point. Changes consumers said they would make include combining errands or trips (79%), driving less (73%), reducing shopping or dining out (61%), delaying major purchases (50%) and driving more fuel-efficient vehicles (46%).

Motorists can always find current gas prices along their route with the free AAA Mobile app for iPhone, iPad, and Android. The app can also be used to map a route, find discounts, book a hotel, and access AAA roadside assistance. Locate gas prices across the country at http://gasprices.aaa.com.
