Thinking about renting a car for your next vacation? AAA Travel has 6 tips that are key to making the most out of your car rental experience.
- Reservation:
Book your car rental several weeks in advance before your departure date to secure the most suitable vehicle for your needs at the best price. When you book in advance you’ll have the largest choice of a wide variety of vehicles to meet your needs whether you’re interested in a family-friendly minivan or a fun and sporty convertible. - Online Check-In:
Every car rental company is different, but if offered always check-in online so you can spend less time at the rental counter and hit the road faster. If you check-in online then you will only need your online confirmation, driver's license and a method of payment. If you are enrolled in any loyalty programs such as the Hertz Gold Plus Rewards program (free for AAA members!) you will only need to show your driver's license and pick up the keys at the designated Gold counters. AAA members can even skip the line and bypass the counter at many airports. Click here for more information about enrolling in the Gold Plus Rewards program. - Requirements:
The requirements when renting a vehicle vary from different countries, different car rental companies, and even different vehicles. Always be sure to do your research and check before booking. For example, when driving internationally, different countries will require you to have an IDP (an International Driving Permit), before you can book a rental car. Click here for more information about IDP and all documents needed for international travel. - Insurance:
Most car rental companies will usually include a third party liability insurance that will, in case of vehicle damage, reduce the renter’s liability. Some car rental companies will even include theft protection and collision damage waivers that will also reduce the renter’s liability in case of an accident. If these products are not included it's highly advisable to add them. - Pick Up:
When picking up your rental car, always examine the car for any existing damages or scratches that can be reflected on the vehicle conditions form so you will not be responsible for them. Don’t forget to search the inside of the car as well as the outside and ask for a copy of the vehicle conditions form before driving away. - Drop Off:
For long distance road trips, unlimited mileage is preferred to get the most of your rental car experience. Always read the fine print of your car rental’s policy but most companies will supply you with a full tank of fuel and will charge you for both missing fuel and a refueling fee if you return your rental car without a full tank of gas. Be sure to fill up the tank before returning the vehicle so that you’re only paying for the amount of gas you actually used. Try avoiding gas stations right near the airport or car rental where you’re dropping off your car because those prices tend to be higher. To save money, check AAA Fuel Price Finder before your trip to find all the cheapest gas stations in your desired area.
