Traveling abroad used to mean having to carry large amounts of cash. With the advent of credit cards with no foreign transaction fees and prepaid cards, travelers now have lots of options when it comes to bringing money on their international trip.

So what is the right mix?  Mix, in fact, is the key word. AAA recommends a mixed wallet when traveling overseas. A mixed wallet includes a combination of cash (foreign banknotes), a prepaid card and at least one major credit card.

By having these options, travelers can ensure that they are never without the right type of currency. Some smaller restaurants might only take cash. Some establishments might need a credit card. By having all of the options, you will be sure to enjoy your trip, and not hold up anyone else's vacation, either.

A foreign currency partner Travelex recently introduced its new Travelex Money Card, which can be loaded with up to six different currencies at one time.

The currencies available to load include:

  • Euros
  • British pounds
  • Japanese yen
  • Canadian dollars
  • Australian dollars
  • Mexican pesos

"This card is pre-loaded with funds so your exchange rate is locked in, and it is not linked to your personal information," said Travelex client relationship director Terry Keller. "Plus, it is chip- and PIN-enabled to provide highly-secure, encrypted transactions."

Want to know the right mix for your trip?

Ask a representative at your local AAA or order your currency online from AAA.

Hi Donna, you can use cash, check or debit card to pay for the Travel Card & Euros. If you use a credit card then it's treated as a cash advance.

can I purchase a Travelex card loaded with Egyptian currency?

After doing a little research through Travelex, it does not appear that they offer cards loaded with Egyptian currency. Sorry!
