Rediscover Close-To-Home America

As travel restrictions continue to ease up, many people, itching to get away, are interested in destinations closer to home at first. For 120 years AAA Western and Central New York has been a part of America’s love for driving and road trips. Here are some recommendations from our travel experts:
- Adirondacks: “I love Lake Placid because it’s so peaceful and the mountains are beautiful. I grew up camping here every year. There’s so much to see and do, no matter what area you go to or what time of year you visit.” – Katie Miechowicz, Orchard Park
AAA Road Trip Recommendations: Adirondack Trail, Adirondack Mountains, High Peaks Scenic Byway, Lake George Scenic Byway, Adirondack Northway Scenic Highway, Central Adirondack Trail - Acadia National Park (Maine): “Our favorite thing in the park is the 20-mile Park Loop Road. Be sure to walk the rocky headlands along the Atlantic coastline. The scenery will take your breath away.” – Mary McIntosh, Watertown Travel Center.
AAA Road Trip Recommendation: Acadia National Park Scenic Loop Road - Boston: “There’s something for everyone. History buffs, sports fans, art lovers, and shopping fanatics will love Boston. I highly recommend Fenway Park Tour and walking the Freedom Trail. Make sure to enjoy some lobster and Boston cream pie.” – Sarah Feldmann, Amherst Travel Center.
AAA Road Trip Recommendations: Battle Road Historic Byway, Southern New England - Mystic Connecticut: “Mystic offers so much for a small town. It’s a maritime village which re-creates the village to many years ago. It’s so much fun for children and adults. The town has the cutest shopping village as well as an aquarium and the famous Mystic Pizza.” – Sara Hodgson, Magic Creator.
AAA Road Trip Recommendations: Southern New England - New York City: “There’s so much to see in New York City. Get great views of the skyline and the Statue of Liberty from the Staten Island Ferry – and it’s free! See the city from above at the Top of the Rock. You must have dinner in one of NYC’s unique neighborhoods. I love Becco in the Theater District, and it’s close to iconic Times Square. Make sure to take a walk in Central Park and pay a visit to the 9/11 Memorial & Museum.” – Sarah Feldmann, Amherst Travel Center.
AAA Road Trip Recommendations: Palisades Interstate Scenic Parkway, Hudson Valley

Thanks for your comment William. The feedback we've been receiving from our members is that they want information about places to visit close to home. Whether they plan to travel now, later in the summer, or in the fall/winter varies by person but we're happy to share the destination information we have available so that when they're ready to travel, they're prepared.
Alpine Lookout
The picture associated with the view from Alpine Lookout is not taken from Alpine Lookout. .??? It’s a nice picture from further up the Hudson of the Bear Mountain Bridge.
Close to home ?
Most of these are 7-8 hours away. Not close in my consideration. 1-2 hours would be what I consider close to home

"Life in the Finger Lakes" magazine has many suggestions for nearby attractions. For instance, the March/April issue has Sampson State Park Marina, Clifton Springs, Irondequoit Bay, Architectural Icons in the Finger Lakes area, the Red Bird Cafe in Brockport, Conesus Lake and Otisco Lake.
Rediscover Close-to-Home & Interactive Travel Map -
1) Adirondacks, NYC, Out of State? Really? Between the Federal guidelines, NYS Governor guidelines, DEC, ADK ... they all recommend staying local! Have you looked at the guidelines to travel to VT, NH, ME? The guidance changes daily based on "Covid spikes". I know people are anxious to travel and vacation, but seriously you are risking lives with this advice!
2) This Interactive Travel Map is meaningless and out of date! It would need to take in acount where you reside and where you plan to go and for how long. It also needs to factor in if you have been self-quarenteened for 2 weeks without covid symptoms and not around anyone with symptoms for that time OR had 1 recent covid test and self-quarenteened for 1 week. The breif summaries presented for each area are inconsistent, inaccurate, out of date or do not provide sufficient guidance to make an informed travel outside one's local area!
