Day 9: Life On Board a River Cruise
Day 9: Life On Board a River Cruise

Many people try to compare river cruising to ocean cruising and the truth is, they are completely different. Both are thoroughly enjoyable, but they are uniquely distinct.
First off, a river cruise ship is much smaller and more intimate than a large ocean cruise liner. A typical river cruise will hold up to 150 passengers allowing you to get to know the crew and staff on board.
The staterooms were spacious and ranged from suites to French balconies to window cabins. The housekeeping is superb and it’s wonderful to return to a tidy room after a long day of sightseeing.

Each day always begins with a variety of breakfast options complete with sparkling wine if you choose. Believe me, there is no shortage of food or beverages on the ship! Lunch is also served daily on the ship and you’ll have a choice of several options.
For this particular voyage, we were aboard the S.S. Antoinette with Uniworld for the 2019 AAA WCNY Member Appreciation Trip. We sailed along the Rhine River and saw multiple towns and cities in four countries: Switzerland, France, Germany and the Netherlands.

At each port, you’ll get to choose from a variety of excursions and most are included in the price of your trip. If a walking tour is one of them, they’ll offer various speeds to meet everyone’s needs. Each day, travelers receive a daily program with all the information you’ll need for that day complete with a schedule. It is delivered to your stateroom the evening before.
On the AAA Member Appreciation Trip, we had a lot of active passengers who were interested in hikes and bike tours as well as walking tours, yet some had mobility issues and chose to remain on the ship and relax in luxurious comfort. There are no wrong decisions on a river cruise!
The S.S. Antoinette had an enclosed pool that was a great spot to relax, along with a spa and fitness center. There were multiple lounges to enjoy a cocktail and a sun deck for taking in the views.

Depending on the port, morning, afternoon or full day excursions are offered and you’re welcome to explore ports on your own as well. Even if you go on a guided walking tour, you’re welcome to break off and start exploring on your own.
The ship will usually offer some type of cocktail party in the lounge before dinner, which never disappoints. In the main dining room, you can order from the chef’s recommendations or create your own multi-course meal. Plus, you’ll be treated to free flowing regional wines. Some diners chose a progressive dinner with the captain!

In some ports, you’ll be able to venture out in the evening depending on the itinerary. Or else enjoy the views from the upper deck or head to the lounge for nightly entertainment.
When our cruise was complete, all of the travelers agreed that river cruising is an incredible way to travel and I wouldn’t be surprised it many turn into repeat customers.
