Were you on the 48.7 million Americans who traveled over Thanksgiving? A growing number of people take this annual opportunity to gather to give thanks with family and friends surrounded by delicious food. This year, AAA's projection of 48.7 million was the most travelers since 2007!

So what's encouraging people to travel these days? Should we expect more travelers for the upcoming holidays? Improvements in the economy during the second half of the year, including rising wages, increased consumer spending and overall strength in consumer confidence are major factors in the growing number of travelers this year.

White gas prices fluctuated during the fall season, AAA estimates U.S. drivers have saved more than $28 billion so far at the pump this year compared to the same period last year.

If the trend continues, we'll see more people traveling during the Christmas holidays, as well. Last year, holiday travel topped 100 million travelers for the first time on record. It is a longer travel period (December 23rd to January 3rd) and therefore attracts significantly more travelers than any other holiday. Yet the motivation to travel remains the same. Improvements in the economy, reasonable gas prices and low unemployment rates mean more disposable income. More Americans have the freedom and the means to reunite with their family and friends to celebrate the season.

"As we enter the start of the holiday season, airports and airplanes will be very crowded and busy. Thanksgiving travel not only includes trips to visit family, but quick trips to places such as New York City, Orlando and other U.S. destinations. As the Christmas and New Year holidays approach, Cancun and the Mayan Riviera are some of the top destinations - relatively quick and easy to get to as well as offering a wide variety of all - inclusive vacation opportunities," said Brian Murray, AAA Western and Central Regional Travel Director. "Europe is also popular in December as the Christmas Markets attract travelers to areas such as Germany, Austria and Switzerland. River cruises are also a great way to experience the Christmas Markets of Europe."
