Gas Prices Continue to Drop

Today’s national average price for a gallon of gasoline is $2.42, down four cents from last week. One year ago, the price was $2.46. The New York State average is $2.74 – down four cents from last week. A year ago, the NYS average was $2.65. AAA Western and Central New York (AAA WCNY) reports the following averages:
- Batavia - $2.81 (down 3 cents since last week)
- Buffalo - $2.83 (down 5 cents since last week)
- Ithaca - $2.61 (down 4 cents since last week)
- Rochester - $2.72 (down 4 cents since last week)
- Rome - $2.74 (down 2 cents since last week)
- Syracuse - $2.62 (down 4 cents since last week)
- Watertown - $2.87 (no change since last week)
When it hit $2.44 last week, the national gas price average set a new record low for 2018. AAA expects the national gas price average to fluctuate through the end of the month.
Globally, crude supply is growing faster than anticipated. Contributing to the surplus is the United States’ record-breaking production levels – which hit the highest level ever recorded last month. To help reduce the growing surplus of global crude supply, last week the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) agreed to cut crude production, which sent oil prices up. If oil prices continue to rise, pump prices could do the same.
