Do You Know These "Big 3" Warning Lights?

You probably know that an illuminated fuel pump icon means that it’s time to fill up the gas tank. But are you familiar with the “Big Three” warning lights and what to do when they illuminate? These lights require immediate attention to avoid costly vehicle damage and/or a breakdown.
1. Oil pressure: Pressurized oil lubricates moving parts inside the engine. If oil pressure is lost for any reason, metal-to-metal contact can occur in seconds, and major engine damage will soon follow. The oil pressure warning light shows a drop of oil falling from an old-style oil can that is sometimes referred to as a “tea kettle.” The oil pressure warning light should always be off when the engine is running. If it comes on and stays on, pull off the road immediately, shut off the engine and call AAA for assistance.
2. Coolant Temperature: Coolant prevents your engine from overheating, which can result in major damage. The coolant temperature warning light looks like a thermometer floating on parallel wavy lines that represent water or coolant. This light should always be off when the engine is running. If the warning light comes on and steam is escaping from under the hood or liquid coolant is draining from under the car, a cooling system leak is indicated. Pull off the road, shut off the engine and call AAA for assistance. If no steam or coolant leakage is apparent, reduce the vehicle speed, open the windows, turn off the air conditioning and set the heater temperature and fan to maximum. If the light doesn’t go off within a minute or so, pull off the road, shut off the engine and call AAA for assistance.
3. Charging System: The charging system warning light looks like a battery with plus and minus symbols inside. This light illuminates when the car’s alternator stops supplying power to the electrical system. This likely won’t cause other damage, but once the warning light comes on the car will only continue to operate on battery power for around 15 minutes. If the warning light comes on, shut down the air conditioning, fan, infotainment system, heated or cooled seats, rear-window defroster and any other optional electrical devices. Drive immediately to the nearest quality repair shop for diagnosis and repair before the vehicle becomes disabled. Should that happen, call AAA for assistance.
