After sailing past dozens of castles along the Rhine River, travelers on the 2019 AAA Western and Central New York Member Appreciation Trip had the opportunity to go inside one!

After arriving by river cruise ship in Koblenz, Germany, travelers could choose from a walking tour of Koblenz or a tour inside Marksburg Castle with free time afterwards in Koblenz.

An adventurous group of active travelers chose to arrive in Koblenz by bicycle from the previous cruise port. The 16 mile bike ride offered some spectacular views!

Those who chose the castle tour learned how Marksburg was the only castle never invaded or destroyed. It dates back to the 12th century and is only open to guided tours. Guests are shown living quarters, a primitive toilet system, the kitchen and more to get a feel for what life was like in the Middle Ages. Besides learning about the history, the best part is the incredible view from the castle, which sits atop a hill.

After a scrumptious lunch on the cruise ship, many guests chose to visit Koblenz, which is home to historic churches along with many shops. In fact, it’s known throughout the Rhine region as a shopping destination. Most of the travelers returned to the ship with bags of souvenirs!

Koblenz

Then travelers were in for a real treat – a Rum Swizzle Party! Sue Smith, AAA WCNY group expert, was on board as a tour director for this trip. She is a cruise expert and helps run AAA’s Solo Travelers Club and she’s known for her signature drink the Rum Swizzle, which is popular in Bermuda. Guests gathered on the sun deck of the ship for island music and great conversation before heading to their staterooms to get ready for a farewell reception.

Uniworld’s Farewell Cocktail Reception and Gala Dinner brought mixed emotions! Everyone had a terrific time, but no one wanted to think about leaving the cruise ship, S.S. Antoinette, that they have grown accustomed to. Luckily, they will enjoy another casual dinner on the ship tomorrow before returning home after the weeklong journey.

Teagan Ward

And to top the day off, travelers enjoyed another live performance by Rochester musician, Teagan Ward. How wonderful to have such special touches and sounds of home only possible on a AAA WCNY chartered trip!
